Understanding the Difference Between Overweight and Obesity

An overweight person is defined as a person who weighs more than the standard weight range for his/her height. When overweight exceeds defined cutoffs, it is termed obesity. Adiposity means a person has an excess amount of body fat. The body mass index or BMI determines what category of overweight one would fall into.

WHO-defined BMI Cut-offs:

35–39.9Moderate risk obesity
≥40High-risk obesity

These cut-offs are still being revised. Some authors propose a BMI cut-off of 25 or greater to define obesity in South Asians.
